She wanted her nails to grow but has been a nail biter all her life and, resultantly, they are nubs. I've allowed her to bite mine because it allows her nails to grow out but it hasn't worked. Now, when she has nothing left of her own, she attacks mine, usually when watching TV, driving, sleeping, and so forth. Now, MY nails are half the length they used to be and are getting to look very similar to hers, though longer still. I don't know how to ask her to stop since she needs to do this so much but, man, it makes it hard for me in terms of my finger's tip sensitivity and the lack of being able to use my nails to grasp for certain things, etc. Opinons?

Those who think this "gross" or believe that there's more germs in her mouth due to this habit are mistaken. The most germs found on humans are found in, you guessed it, your mouth. The great majority of them do not survive stomach acids, one reason why you're not sick all the time.
Stating something like "ewww", or "gross" is, in addition to an expression that serves to expose one's lack of articulation, very judgemental. I'm looking for suggestions, not inarticulate grunts.
Thanks to those who actually did suggest something, though a couple here are correct in depicting her as an "animal" (and, from my perspective, in more ways than one!). ;)

It sounds like a psychological problem, take her to a good therapist; if that does not work apply something nasty to your fingernails, like chicken poop.

Tape your nails.
Apply a cream or lacquer. At your local grocery store or pharmacy you'll be able to find a plethora of nail creams and lacquers. Simply apply them to your nail and you'll get an unpleasant bitter taste each time you try and bite your nails! Brands such as "Control-It," or Orly beauty's "No Bite" are such products. But truthfully, there are many on the market that all work well. If it tastes bitter, it should be a deterrent.
she should chew gum.
Wear mittens.
talk to her
=)

Well since this is a gross question, I suggest a gross answer,
Scratch your nether regions when shes not looking, then when she goes to bite your fingernails, she'll smell your funkyness. Plus she may even get a nice nasty case of E.coli poisoning, and what cures an illness faster than a worse illness.

if she just needs something to chew on that has that same consistency, then have her buy a pack of fake nails and nibble on them. letting her bite yours isn't helping her any, it's just making things worse.
try bribing her to get her to stop the nail biting. tell her that if she can get her nails to a healthy length you'll treat her to a manicure and pedicure. if that's not enough throw in a full body massage for the both of you. YOU deserve it :)

maybe she should get her nails coated in acrylic, even if they're short. you can't bite thru that stuff very easily. if it's that bad of a problem maybe she should go see a doc about it. maybe they can suggest some kind of lifestyle change that can help her break her habit. or maybe replace that habit with something different. should could always start on her toenails ;-) or perhaps hypnotism.

She can go buy this nail polish thingy that is made for people who bite nails. When you taste it, will taste horrible and hopefully get her of the habit. You can buy it anywhere, pharmacies, supermarkets, safeway, target, etc
And its around $7-20

I'd suggest offering her alternatives in the following order:
-Your toes
-Your dog/cat's nails
-Your Grandmother's nails
-Neighbor's nails
-A crossing guard's nails
By this point her's should be plenty long.

If she wants long nails she needs to break the habit. That's bad for her image to do something like that ,it shows weakness or that shes stressed out.Don't let her bite your nails.
(Many blessings)

That's just strange. Why you would let someone else bite your nails is behind me and that is kinda sick actually. She doesn't need this. She thinks she needs this. This is pathetic.
