Create materials that have longer usable lives. A piece of wood that resists rot and insect infestation does not require replacement as frequently. Buildings last longer, and the costs associated with building are spread out over a longer period of time.

Create building materials from widely available items not currently utilized. I saw a really cool fence made out of grass, in Colorado last summer. The people put up two sheets of open wire mesh, there were 1-foot squares in the mesh. Then they just dropped grass in between. They had plenty of grass in the yard. The people build a nice 6-foot privacy fence, from grass at a trivial cost. The same fence build from cedar would have cost thousands of dollars, and used hundreds of board feet of wood. The wood takes longer to grow, and much more energy to process (at harvesting, milling, distributing, warehousing, fabricating, and construction scrap).
