Well, depression isn't really a taboo in any society for that matter, its just that people who are depressed cannot express it, or are unable to express it, or they maynot be such an open person. Some people do not tell about their depression because they feel that people won't be able to relate to their problem and will only end up fussing over them for nothing. Other reasons could be like, they may think that they have a 'reputation' to protect, and by showing their weakness, they are just ruining their 'image'; people also feel that depression should not be shown since that will obviously make their loved ones feel worried.
And depression, for some reason or the other, ends up bieng suppressed and not bieng shown, thus the ideas on depression bieng 'taboo'. Well, you certainly are right about people bieng slightly uncomfortable about expressing their views on depression, because the majority of so called 'sensible people' relate showing depression with bieng pessimistic, a person needing psychatric help and also, suicide, without actually weighing the problem or issue whch is leading to depression. But when you can be happy yaar, why be depressed?

Depression is a term which is prevalent for more than the past thirty years/twenty five.[in India] As far as I can recollect, my grand mother suffered from a severe menopause syndrome [that was termed insanity] in the sixties. She had treatment and was totally cured . It wa a passing phase.
I thought it was a euphemistic way of saying that a person is depressed[of course I am sure there are varying degrees that a shrink would vouch for] when she is imbalanced, hysterical, etc...., The words do not mean the same thing ;however, this term 'depression' obviously can lead to something more worrying, and that is why people are uncomfortable with the usage . 'Madness' is a sad thing and no normal human being would like to lose control of one's thinking capacity and sanity.

Some people are uncomfortable with depression, because it is a feeling of having little or no confidence. Having depression is an upset feeling, that makes you feel like you'll never get over being upset. Being unhappy all the time, makes some depression victims suicidal. People who suffer from depression, get tired of not being happy like people who have more social lives. They realize other people's lives, and they get upset because they don't have a life like that. This means, that they see happier lives having a easier time socializing. It is common to see a person with depression, have social problems. Although there are medications for depression, and they are known to help. I once knew someone, who suffered from depression.
I hope this helps.

I don't think so! What makes you think that people are uncomfortable talking about depression, especially someone else's depression. That makes for good gossip! Knowledge is increasing especially about mental health and yoga , meditation, Art of Living are all becoming very popular cults. So there is absolutely no taboo and I think you are mistaken and being very sensitive. Be more open and friendly and you will realise that you can talk about anything.

It makes people uncomfortable because it can't be fixed right away and THAT is what makes people uncomfortable we are a quick fix society. alcoholism and drug addiction is the same. when someone goes into treatment (unlike in the news these days) people think that's the end of the problem when in fact its the beginning!

I know why I'm uncomfortable. Most of the time, as a young child and early young adult, you don't get exposed to depression. As you age, you get more and more exposed to that issue. A lot of the time, people don't know what to say, so that makes them uncomfortable.
