If you are talking about your irrigation system for the lawn, it could be calcium buildup causing a blockage. Or, the pump could have broken it's seal, causing the suction to fail.
This of course, depends on your water source and pump type.
A well pump has a suction system, a public water source runs, usually, on water pressure.

I know this will sound silly but is the water turned on to the system? If it is then check to make sure the sprinkler connections are connected. If all of that is ok then check that is power going to valve when it is on.

It could mean one of two things, either the filter system is clogged, or the water in the main is shut off.
