companion sounds like slippers and pipe.
partner sounds like you work together as you mentioned.
my other half is a bad way of saying a nice thing
boy/girlfriend is ok if you're under 20!
hmmm
we're going to have to come up with an acceptable name for unmarried committed people with/without kids, that is not cheap, childish or plain cr*p!
answers on a postcard please................

Companion doesn't sound right or feel right when you say it. Companion reminds me of two elderly friends. Partner is a much better option than boyfriend or girlfriend, especially when you're over a certain age. When i was in my teens i had boyfriends. At 46 i think it might sound rediculous if i was to describe my other half as my boyfriend. I'm sure many will agree.

Usually people use the word partner when they're older (my parents used to do that as they were never married).
It's inbetween boyfriend and girlfriend and being a married couple. and companion is too formal.

It's a matter of preference. Many people do use companion...but some prefer the term 'partner.' It pretty much means the same thing, and you might not want to let such a petty thing annoy you.

I agree. It seems to be a British thing as well - I have gotten very confused! I did meet people back in the day who were gay and used "partner" to refer to their other half.
As a girl, I introduce my boyfriend as "my boyfriend".

Because he is my partner in life. I feel a tad silly calling a 44 years old man a boy in any term. He is more than a lover, more than just a friend.

I think it's actually rude and it's show how far our society has gotten in terms of not respecting the man/women union. I don't like it and it's stupid, men were born leaders and women are our equal but their not supposed to be our 'partner', that's just dumb.

Does it really matter what I call my partner, significant other, lover, Master?
If I am taking the time to politely introduce Him why quibble about some silly semantics?

Partner means that they are equal-- many other terms define roles, i.e. "husband" may mean that person has rights over "wife" in some cultures. So for some "partner" may mean they're being equal.

Companion sounds more like you are introducing your dog/cat.
