I was wondering, does this hurt? I didn't have my skin cut when I was born for some personal reasons and well, I don't really think girls like the skin on it from what I hear and I was wondering if I get it cut how much would it hurt? Do they put you under anesthesia or whatever for it? I'm 15 so I'd probably get a bunch of erections which I thought would make it hurt a lot more. I'm also a bit embarrassed to tell anyone I want it cut but I really want it done.

Well, unlike newborns you won't scream your guts out (discussed later on with links) because you can be put to sleep. But recovery can be painful for some for especially the first two weeks, especially with erections, as it disturbs the wound. Make sure you research it well, because once you have it done you can't go back if you don't end up liking it. Most guys in the world are uncircumcised, and in some American states its pretty common since circumcision rates have fallen a lot. Circumcision is a traditionally Jewish and Muslim procedure, although it was introduced and encouraged to the Western, developed world as a way to stop masturbation, especially with the help of Dr. Kellogg. (see link 1) However, although scientific studies have discovered that circumcision harms masturbation by up to over 60% (2), needless to say, it doesn’t completely stop masturbation. Many circumcised guys find it more convenient to use a commercial lubricant as a result (3) since the typically moist foreskin that is like the eyelids is not present to rub the glans with (4).

Most developed nations quickly rejected circumcision after noticing its ineffectiveness against masturbation, and as a result the United States remains the last developed nation doing it to a significant percentage of newborns. (5) This was done as a result of the for-profit American health care system promoting myths about benefits of circumcision (6), such preventing penile cancer (6a, 6b), preventing HIV (6c, 6d) despite the USA being the developed nation with the highest HIV rates and circumcision rates (6e, 5), and preventing STDs (6d, 6f). As a result, circumcision is now brings in hundreds of millions of dollars to doctors and the American health system. (7)

However, circumcision has been becoming less popular as years have passed by. In the 1960s over 90% of guys were circumcised in the USA, now circumcision rates are as low as 14% in some states. (8) More and more parents are discovering that circumcision carries more risks than benefits, and realize that by leaving their sons uncircumcised, they have the choice of choosing what they’d like, since the surgery is irreversible.

Circumcision risks include the loss of sexual pleasure according to multiple studies (2, 9, 10, 11). Those studies take into effect many sensation points, including the foreskin, and they involve many participants. There have been other studies that claim no difference, but they don’t even take into effect the nerve endings on the foreskin, which as seen in one study, are some of the most sensitive points on the penis (10). One study even found an increase in erectile dysfunction rates after circumcision (10a). In another study, it was found that females ended up reaching orgasm with and preferring uncircumcised males in 9 out of 10 cases (10b). In addition, circumcision is extremely painful on newborns (12, 13, 14), and you risk many bad conditions, such as a buried penis when too much foreskin is removed and limits the size of the penis (15), or adhesions or skin bridges that develop from the head to the shaft when the skin heals after the surgery (16), meatal stenosis [occurs in up to 10% of circumcised males!] when the opening of the penis becomes irritated from too much exposure and rubbing and begins to close up (17), and meatal ulcers (18). All those risks are, of course, not including the possibility of having too much skin removed, which can cause discomfort during erections due to lack of skin to allow the penis to expand, and could consequently cause a hairy penis by pulling pubic hair and skin to the shaft. Often a circumcision scar develops around the penis after circumcision. In addition, circumcision has negative effects on breastfeeding. (18)

To conclude, here is a link that describes the anatomy of the foreskin (19) and the development of the foreskin with infants, a link especially helpful for parents (19a). Ultimately, one survey found that although uncircumcised guys are a bit more satisfied percentage-wise, it’s within the margin of error. (20) The only difference is that those unsatisfied uncircumcised guys can simply get circumcised and end up satisfied either way. In addition, in one survey it was found that up to half of circumcised guys expressed concerns on wishing to have had the choice themselves. (21) That, along with the risks and negative effects that are being seen more with the help of the Internet, may be what is bringing down circumcision rates.

The actual procedure shouldn't hurt, because you would be given local anesthesia (or general anesthesia, if you're squeamish). But the 2-4 weeks of recovery afterwards might suck, but that's what painkillers are for. From what I've read/heard (I'm uncircumcised), the glans (penis head) will feel oversensitive and even painful for about a month or so until it desensitizes to the point where it becomes bearable. And erections will pull on stitches, so that will probably cause pain.

If you're not having any physical/medical problems with your foreskin it's probably not a good idea to get circumcised. Most women I know think the penis is rather ugly, regardless if it's circumcised or not. As long as you "know how to use it" and you keep it clean, most women don't care if you're circumcised or not. And many can't really tell the difference if you have an erection since they tend to look similar. So getting circumcised because you think girls might not like it is a very bad reason.

There are a lot of nerve endings in the foreskin that are cut away in a circumcision, and these nerve endings would've otherwise contributed to sexual sensitivity (links 1, 2). Also, several studies seem to say that the foreskin might actually be beneficial to the sexual satisfaction/pleasure of not only the man, but the woman as well (links 3, 4, 5).

So if you got circumcised, things will likely not feel as good afterwards (for you or potentially your partner). As long as your foreskin's working normally, you keep it clean (which is quick and easy, as I'm sure you know), and you practice safe sex (when the time comes), it's probably better to stay the way you are.

And believe it or not, about 70-80% of the world's men are uncircumcised, so the women that go with that population either prefer their men that way or at the very least don't care. So it's just a matter of finding the right girl, and she'd have to be really shallow if she required you be circumcised.

What have you heard about girls?

All girls are different in their likes and dislikes, and almost all girls do not rate circumcision or lack of as being the most important thing in the relationship! In fact I would say it's not even in the top 50. Sorry!

Also, where do you live? Uncircumcised is normal in Europe and the UK, Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Canada...even parts of Africa and in parts of the US (California, the rate is low there). How do you know you won't move or live there when you're older?

Personally I am female and like uncircumcised. And most guys here in Australia are uncircumcised. Please don't get an invasive operation done just because of what you have heard about some shallow girls who are used to mutilated penis. Maybe wait a while, then try sex first? See how your sex life goes? You can always get it chopped off, but you'll never be able to grow it back, and a lot of people regret getting it done. If you don't have any problems, you don't need to fix it.

You are correct that although they use anaesthetic and painkillers it will hurt. I have heard that getting an erection afterwards for at least a month is painful and to be avoided. And of course no sex or anything.

There is no reason to be cut. At least 85% of the worlds men are natural like you and I. You should be proud that you didn't have your penis mutilated for no reason at all. If it wasn't meant to be there then why was it put there is the way I look at it.
A lot of the women in the USA have been told lies that a natural uncut guy is dirty. This is not true. All you need to do is pull the foreskin back and clean underneath it each day when you shower. Thats all i do and have never had a problem with being dirty.

I *think* that you get given a local anaesthetic first, and maybe Emla cream too.

It is your body, but I'd personally wait until you were at least 18 to have it done, that way people cannot stop you because you are "underage" or whatever.

The decision should be yours because *you* want to do it in the depths of yourself, not because you want to do it for some girl or whatever. Doing things for other people if you don't truly want to do them too never works well, for anyone. You only end up regretting, or feeling resentful, and that is not a nice thing to live with.

As for girls liking a penis with or without a foreskin, I honestly think it is up to the individual woman. Some like them, some don't.

Go see a Urologist! It's not a big deal and very common in the USA! I was cir'd at 18 and would do it again today! There is nothing good about a foreskin! Where being circumcised has no negatives, just positives! Sex is 100% better, it is cleaner, Healthier, looks better and your chance of acquiring STD's and HIV are 60% less than if you are uncut! The foreskin is a bacteria trap! I was done in the Drs office with a local, watched the whole thing! Was a bit sore, but really no biggy! No sex for 30 days sucked, but well worth it!

I like the skin on, I love uncircumcised penises. In fact, I'm disappointed if I come across a circumcised one. Don't think all girls prefer it cut.

Just in case you're interested, clinical studies have shown women are more likely to achieve orgasm with an uncut man.

Well I was just looking at more information on this procedure becuase I just had it done 48 hours ago. I did too plenty of research before I came to my decision. Nobody can tell you if its the right decision for you and I won't do that. The decision is up to you. I will just tell you about the process I went through. Had consultation with Dr. I am 23 so didn't need parents consent but you definitely will need it. Consultation was brief and just asked few questions, took a peek, and set date. Day of surgery went to hospital. I was completely under anesthesia and all I remember is them putting me to sleep and then me waking up. 100% no recollection of the procedure or any feeling of him even touching or doing anything. I think thats good becuase you don't want to feel the pain of the cut being made as it happens. Woke up and had minimal pain. Had bandage wrapped around my member. There was bleeding obviously but very minimal. Got home and still wasn't feeling too bad even as the anesthesia started to fade off. Didn't feel any pain because I sat very cautiously on the end of a chair with a towel wrapped loosely around me. First nights sleep was ok. but it was tough for my member to even be in contact with bed sheets but not too bad. When get erections at night (which is common after surgery) feel like about a 4 out of 10 on the pain scale. Just have to stand up and get rid of the erection. Today is 2nd day since surgery and the pain in my opinion is much worse then yesterday mainly for the fact that when I took a shower this morning I took the bandaging off which was pretty brutal because now I feel I have this very dry brand new sensitive skin area exposed and any type of contact from clothes causes some pain. I timed the procedure to be done 2.5 weeks before school started, which was good because I am done with my summer job and just stay at home with a towel wrapped around me loosley. I honestly feel like I would struggle in pain to wear clothing right now from it brushing up against my member. Anyway, can't say much else because only 2nd day but if you have questions dont be embarassed to send me an e-mail with questions. Just remember this....don't listen to these people who tell you what decision you should make whether its to get it done or to not get it done. Its your decision and all anybody can tell you is about their personal experiences to help give you the info to make your decision. Just so you know where I am coming from I personally had it done for both appearance reasons as well as medical. My member was getting really tight (phimosis) and felt slight discomfort. I was strongly considering getting it done even before the tightness just for appearance reasons though, but not sure if I would have followed through with it or not. Too early to say whether overall happy with it or not but I think I will be once I get through the first few painful days.

Just wanted to add that my personal opinion would be to wait until you are 18 to make this decision, but if you want to do it and talk with your parents about it then that is ok too.

ONLY get circumsized if YOU want to, NOT because the girls don't like the skin.

and... yes it will hurt. the urolgist will give you some local freezing (like at the dentist) and snip snip, its gone. it is usually done as an outpatient, and once the freezing wears off, you will feel it for a couple of days. they usually give you valium for a couple of days after the procedure to prevent errections.

I stress to you to only have it done for yourself, the girls will come and go, you can't possibly make them all happy.

good luck

Normally for the adult procedure they don't really put you under anesthesia. They give you some medication to relax, so you will be kinda awake, but you won't remeber anything. Then they will numb the area. Afterwards there is some discomfort, but with some pain medication and some ice you will make it through the ordeal.

I'd leave it alone. My guess is a lot of girls would find it a curiosity (in a good way). You've got something unique.

Circumcision is a much more painful, complex, and costly procedure for adults.

There are a lot of circumcised guys who'd love to have your foreskin. The grass is always greener on the other side. Just be happy with what you've got.
