Mark McGwire 70*. Feel better?

Yes,
I beleive all records broken during the period from 1985 - 2010 (I believe MLB will be clean by then) should have an asterisk denoting *record was broken during the performance enhancing drug era.

Look at the records (not just Bonds)

McGwire - definite asterisk, even though Andro wans't banned then, there wasn't as much info about it.

Ripken Jr. - I know I'll get heat for this opinion, but one of the primary reasons people take steroids is to speed recovery time, so it makes sense that he would have used it.

A-Rod - Although he hasn't broken any records, playing in this era casts suspisions over everybody.

Clemens - When it looked like he was done, he suddenly gained a resurgence, typical of steroids.

There are many others who could be on this list, I only selected a few. All players who play or played in this era deserve the asterisk next to their stats.

Exemption to the rule: If MLB somehow finds a way to test past samples for all performance enhancing drugs and clears individuals 1 by 1.

No. In the 70's MLB players took Amphetamines like candy. Should we put an asterisk next to all their names too?

Do I think it is fair, no, but you can't put an asterisk next to the record of everyone who has ever been accused of doing anything. And, unfortunatly MLB has no one to blame but themselves. Do you realize that Steroids were not even a banned substance until a few years ago. Illegal, but they were not banned by the MLB. Therefore, no rule was broken. Ridiculous but true. And also, there is not proof that he did it. Do I think he did - absolutely no doubt. But you can't put an asterisk for an allegation.

Its already broken but if you are talking generally about his stats then I believe no. Unless they start wiping others who took steriods records away why should they take away Mark Mcgwire's? People forget the state of baseball before the 98 season...look what he and Sosa did for the game.

Did I miss something? Did McGwire pop hot on a steroid test? If I recall correctly the answer is “no.” All you have are suspicions. McGwire gave us years of great baseball. Just appreciate that and move on.

No. When he accomplished his feat the anabolic drug Andro was not on the banned substance list. When it was discovered that he took it, McGwire stopped using it. He has never openly admitted that he took steroids.
You would have to asterisk Bonds and Sosa as well and they have never been proven to use either.

There are procedures in place, implemented by MLB, to check for the use of drugs. Since McGuire has never failed a drug test he is home free. No asterisk, just congratulations for a great year.

its not a record anymore. btw, barry does not have an asterisk by his tied record and he will not (officially) when he breaks it. why do you want to instigate so bad?
