There are some chat rooms you can meet up on, that are very safe like www.habbo.co.uk/www.habbo.com (depending where you live)
Or, your friend can make an msn account without even downloading msn messenger. www.iloveim.com
Or, tag is good. Yahoo messenger also involves no download.
If none of these help, then it's best to turn to google, that normally solves most problems
