therefore, the best way to protect yourself against any assailant is to attack him before he attacks you... or better... before the thought of doing so has even occurred to him, so you may be able to render your assailant unconscious before he is even aware of your very existence

I disagree. The best form of defense is vigilance. Attack is usually a sign of fear, because you have no guarantee that the other person WILL attack and, unless they do just that, *you* are in the wrong if you attack first. Worse, you could mistakenly attack someone who never meant to attack you, but who's darn sure to come after you *now* ... people do regain consciousness, you know. So you may have made a very real enemy where before you only had a possible one.

A far braver tactic is to keep careful watch on your enemy and *intercept* his attack, so that a) he still does little or no damage to you, and b) you can clearly prove to everyone else (if you're a politician, your constituents as well as other countries) that you are in the right.

Any martial arts practitioner will tell you that it is best to avoid a fight if you can. You should never do a preemptive attack.

I like your reasoning, best keep it to yourself if you feel the need to inforce it mind.

in this country you have to be attacked robbed and beaten sensless before you can think about defending yourself.

bunch of gibberish. same reason adduced by the us for attacking iraq. works sometimes though. violence never gives birth to a well formed child.
