hmmm, look at their actions...does it seem like they really care about you or do they blow you off? do they give you advice that has good outcomes or do they seem to get you into trouble?

I dont believe that there is any set criteria to define if a person you are with is your true/best friend or not..
The one you have a deep liking for as a friend may be looked upon as the worst man in your life by sme of your family member.. or your spouse... or possibly the same person does not reciprocate your feelings in the same way as you expect from him....
Lets first see who you consider your friend before you know whether someone else is your friend or not.
You Me or anyone else consider a person as a friend whom you can reply upon and you can share your true feelings about just anything that is going on in your life and you can speak your heart out without hesitation... that is your true friend.
And the same goes for the other person also... If someone considers you in a position that they can speak their heart out to you and feel at comfort in your company then they will be a friend to you...
You must find such a person who behaves towards you in this way and then you can say that he is you true friend..

You see, you just cant at the end of the day you should keep a diary at write what happened and when the diary is full you go back and see who hurt you in them past few weeks!

if this person wants really to know about you while she or he doesn't have any particular interest in being with you, then you can call this same person a good friend.
