Is this high? Could it push even higher and the patient be ok? What are the symtoms to expect at this level reading?

The figures of 180/110 are meaningless unless you can tell us the age of the patient, and his pulse rate when taken. The apparent B/P's measured by your doctor are not actual pressures, -(that is, those generated by the left ventricle of the heart) so placing too much store on their values is misleading.

However, changes in them -over the course of minutes, hours, days, and even months, pretty accurately reflect changes in cardiac-generated pressures and this is why they're so useful in diagnoses. They simply reflect these changes, if your doctor can be bothered to interpret them correctly. Sadly, most doctors can't and won't.They can certainly go higher, - mine often do, -well over 200 systolic, but then, I'm 80, and work out hard, regularly.

"100 + your age " is average for Western adults resting.

Not borderline; definitely high.

110 over 60 would be considered low (for any group) but not necessarily dangerous.

140 over 90 would be considered high, but not dangerous.

Both of these figures would fall within the 'normal' range in a western society.

Blood pressure is easily misunderstood, because it varies so much. In the short term, it SHOULD go up and down a lot, to cope with the variations in your body's activities. Over a long period, it should stay constant. Long term increase or decrease usually indicates that something is wrong.

An individual measurement can be very misleading. It can be artificially high, because some people get anxious about medical testing. This is called 'white-coat hypertension'; the anxiety raises blood pressure temporarily.

Other temporary increases in pressure are perfectly healthy. The pressure during vigorous exercise can be massive, but this is not harmful in a reasonably healthy person.

Hypertension often displays no symptoms at all.
Sometimes headaches or kidney pain.
Many people have higher BP in the mornings. Take your blood pressure one hour after getting up in the morning
again around lunch time and before going to bed, from this
you can determine your average. Your BP as stated is certainly on the high side and ought to be checked by your
doctor. 140/90 is borderline. But don't worry mine was
225/120 when I was first diagnosed, to tabs every day and
I've been fine for the last 20 years!
Good luck.

Yup thats high. Its not the big figure that is the concern but the smaller of the two. It should be below 95.

High BP is most often symptomless which is why most people are urged to go the chemist and get theirs checked as it can be high and you'd never know.

I have seen people with much higher BPs so it the answer to your second question is yes. However, as far as being ok is concerned.... Well prolonged high BP can cause strokes.

It is easily medicated, however, and one can expect a normal reading on meds. Worth a trip to your doc...

All the best.

140/90 is bordeline------there are often reasons for high blood pressure which can be cured, but the doctors cant be bothered to find out---costs to much---so they give you blood pressure tablets and the side effects that go with them

time to call the doctor, that's not borderline. it's high and you need to find out what can be done to lower it. yes, it could go higher
