Sure. As long as one single particle of sentient life exists with in the realm of this Universe then by definition of our being of and in the Universe which must amplify this sentiment; our own feeling, the Universe cares. We are the only tangible component that we know of that describes the Universe to itself, the ultimate expression of Universal Narcissist indulgence. Simple really when you consider it.

depends how you define the universe and care?

for a start the actual word care means a burdened state of mind, as that arising from heavy responsibilities; worry.

So does the universe have a collective mind, that is capable of worrying?

the word can also be used in the context of watchful oversight; charge or supervision:

is the universe supervising us in some profound manner? well science seems to think that we are expanding away from our universal centre, which seems to suggest that the universe couldn't wait to get rid of this piece of atomic dust.

Giving the Universe some form of salient body and mind is a bit like religion isn't it, and most philosophers have proved that having a god for just this lump of rock, they could not find any evidence of his/her care for it, so why should it work on a bigger scale.

Does the house you built with all the love and care, that you made into your home, cares for you in return? The Universe is just a bigger house in which human soul is manifest in various forms of human body and mind. Then whose love and labour then the Universe is an expression of? The care of the great wonderful ones works in mysterious and wondrous ways.

The human mind to personifies what is grand and yet not fully understood. One could say, the trees stood still watching in descending shades of darkness like ghostly apparitions with their ghastly arms outstretched, as the night softly spread its black velvet veil upon the weary eyes of the lone traveller. It can be asked - who would care for the lone traveller and who would watch over him through the night in the middle of the forest? What is the purpose of such thoughts?

The Universe does care for human body, mind and soul in its own wonderful ways. First of all, it is place to live, a place where we are. I hope you will agree with me in my wonder about this place. I can, for instance, sit for hours and wonder about what this Universe is all about / where has it emerged from / and how will it end, if ever / where are its edges / and what people or strange beings might be in its far-flung corners?

However, the most of the Universe is bleak, cold and hostile place for any possibilities of life, as we know it, but the fact is that we still exist in it signifies that the Universe has a definite place for us in its folds, that it has a soft spots in its fearsome, mighty and mysterious heart.

The Universe is an exciting place, and there are more obvious ways of its universal care. For instance, we induce our sense of greatness, grandeur, beauty and magnificence from what we see around us: the heavenly objects upon the firmament, the rich tapestry of flora and fauna that the Earth is decked with, the coming and going of seasons, the passing of days, and the rolling in and out of months, the stars and Moon, the Sun and the galaxies far away, the worlds unknown. This is the magic that the Universe continually casts upon us keeping our mind eternally galvanised into greatest rhythms and harmonies of thought.

If the universe is a sentient being it may do.

As it isn't, it probably doesn't give two hoots.
