In Canada and the USA it's probably pine and/or fir. I have no idea what they use in NZ, to be honest.

Spruce and fir because it's easier to find straight grain and it grows fast. It isn't a very hard wood but that's OK for framing houses. Pine is sometimes used, but it can be pretty knotty. Hardwoods are too expensive for framing, cedar and redwood, while soft, have better uses where the wood can be seen.

In Canada you will find that fir, pine and larch in that order will be the materials that are used in framing and general construction. Be it huge dam building or just ordinary house. Those are the materials generally used because they are the cheapest and safest construction materials on the market.

Pine or Fir: if shipped in from Japan then it's the same, from the U.S. Northwest and Alaska

fir on horizontal framing members and spruce pine for vertical because of cost and availability

most likely pine. it is pretty standard becuase of its cost and availability and easy of milling.
