When the news talks about the 'fifth or sixth' richest country in the world, does that mean per head of population or does it mean gross product. Per head of population, what are the top 10 countries?

They usually base it on something called gross domestic product GDP. The value of everything the country produces.

There is another method, gross national income GNI which is essentially the same as GDP plus all income earned from other countries as well.

I would say that it's per-capita. With well over 1 billion residents, China will soon have the largest GDP owing to explosive growth but per-capita income will relegate it to 3rd world status for many decades to come.
