Hi,

My baby is 9 months old. She weighs only 5.7kg. There are mixed openions I am getting regarding her milk intake. My freinds/parents thinks she is not getting enought calories through my breast milk, as may be i am not eating high cal. food. whereas, my GP doesn't agree and says, mothers food intake has nothing to do with getting calories in her milk. My baby is currently fully breast fed. i have tried to give her various brands of Formula, by bottle/cup/sipper, and she hates it. Now a days just a sight of formula, she starts crying. If I forcefully give her, she vomits it later. She is 9 months old , but looks 5 months old baby. She is otherwise doing great development wise. Crawling everywhere. responding to new things. However, her poor weight gain is frustrating me, and is affecting my health now. Please someone help.

what you eat has everything to do with your breast milk. up your calories. also, at 9 months she should be getting cereal and baby food along with your milk.

What you eat doesn't affect your milk- unless you are underweight and the milk isn't being produced.

Are you introducing foods now? I would start with cereal to help her out. You can mix it with breastmilk. Our baby didn't like Rice, but loved Oatmeal. I also mixed a bit of applesauce because she liked it.

Nurse as often as you can right now. But, she is ready for foods.

Our friends baby was born in June. She only weighs 15 lbs. The doctor was worried but the older brother was the same way. This baby is not even on the growth charts for a 1 year old. Some babies are smaller and don't make the average- but that is rare. Oh...and her daughter is formula fed and on tablefood now.

Introduce foods, nurse often, and make it positive. Babies and children are little barometers when it comes to how mommy is feeling- and they sense it right away. When my baby eats, I eat too- so she sees me.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Well, for starters your GP is right about the milk. She won't suffer if you aren't taking in enough calories - you will.

At nine months she should be well into weaning now - and getting a lot of her goodness from her food, as opposed to milk. Try offering yogurts, cheese, stuff like that that provides calcium and milk in a different form. AND stop stressing about it!!!! That will not help either of you if you get ill.

Good luck - follow your own feelings and the advice of your doctor. Mothers have an uncanny knack of knowing whats right or wrong for their babies.

Certainly your daughter's weight is startling low. You should contact LLL straight away if you've found your GP unable to help. Only if you are severely undernourished yourself should there be an issue with calories in your breastmilk. It could be an issue of not enough hindmilk being taken by your daughter if she's not nursing long enough on one breast. See a specialist ASAP, as 5.7kg at 9mths is very very low.

She needs to be getting babyfood and baby cereal along with your milk. She probably isnt getting full enough off of just milk anymore. She also can have juice/water by sippy cup. I would try those things with her and see what happens.

WOW that is 12.5663489 pounds. I honestly think you need to take her to a different doctor and damn fast! That is just too small for a 9 month old.

Will she eat babyfood?
