It's a market-controlling device to keep certain crops' prices from plummeting, due to an overabundance of supply.
It is a shame that such a scheme is needed, as there are many people who go hungry each day.
However, if the prices are too low, the small farmers will no longer be able to stay in business.

yeah and you aklso know that sometime in the future there will be a food shortage in our lifetime. It will be awesome when we screwed up all our farmland by building parks and stuff. Then we become dependent on bringing food from other countries who will also be feeling from the food shortage. I'm sure they will sell it to us. My understanding is with the population growth and all etc...we will have a food shortage in about 30-40 years but you can check on that. And no ...even if there is no food shortage...why pay farmers not to work? The hell with that. What we could do is lower the amount of food we import.

my grandmother gets paid off for her crops. It's been that way for a good bit now. She really didn't have any other choice. It's kinda like being forced to sell your allotment to the government and it is for ten years at a time with my grandmothers' allotment. They are trying to do away with the "small" farmers now and will probably filter out the big rollers in the future. She doesn't get very much for it either. Just another way for the government to make some money off of us. Sad but unfortunately true.

The reasons vary from year to year, but it is always a political game. This year the Democrats are protecting several vulnerable young representatives from farm states by pushing a ridiculous farm bill. The Republicans play the same game.

There are no US federal programs that pay farmers not to grow crops. Sorry, but you are wrong.

I knew that they dump rice and other crops into the ocean to keep price up. however not that they pay them not to grow! what i think it does : if they grew any crop, they can't make profit and most likely even loose money since it is cheaper to get it elsewhere. why they pay them is to keep them quiet and avoid protests and publicity. they pay them a little more than just to eat and not die.however i am sure most of them have other income too. as far as hunger goes, it isn't because of lack of food, there is enough food but they prefer pouring them into the ocean and/or dumpsters. greed!

It's meant to keep the price of crops from dropping too low and putting farmers out of business. Also, it's meant to protect our economy from foreign imports from countries where labor is cheaper.

I think it comes down to capital gain.
For example,
" why does'nt the Spanish Govt. tax the tobacco growers?"
Yes that gentleman wearing that white shirt and black tie with his arm in the air.....what's your answer?
