Right. So apparently, goldfish are out of the question. :P

And so are adult male bettas, and female bettas (I heard that after they have babehs, the males have a little snack.)

So what fish CAN you put in there?

Depends on what kind of a set-up you have. A betta does fine in a tropical aquarium with most other fish, as long as the aquarium is big enough. I've had good luck placing them with catfish, loaches, plecos, and others that prefer to stay near the bottom, since the betta prefers to claim the top as his own.

I agree with keeping other bettas (male or female) out of that tank ... the betta can do well with tetras or other tropical fish that can move fairly fast to keep out of its way. The larger, showier fish such as angels and gouramis are probably not so good, since the betta might snap at their long fins and possibly injure them!

And, they do absolutely fine on their own. They can be kept for several years in a bowl, or as a specimen fish in a larger tank ... it's up to you. If you want to keep one alone, they're practically carefree, just feed it once in awhile, and change the water from time to time.

They can adapt to almost any conditions ... cold water is fine, warm water is fine, and they don't seem at all picky about whether the water is clean or dirty.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

Male Betta can some times be placed in tanks with other fish but you have to make sure that the tank is big...I would recommend atleast a 20 Gallon tank, and it should be planted and have hading places. Male and female Betta should not be placed in the same tank, fish like guppies should not be placed with them either because of their flowing tails...male bettas see that as a threat or challenge kind of thing and will attack...it would be best to talk to ur local pet store fish person. Good luck...if all else fails...a nice 2 Gallon tank for him to live in alone would work good.

Contrary to popular belief, a betta is NOT a mad killing device. Bettas are just territorial. They aren't even built for killing; they only attack to scare their opponents away, but in a confined space like a tank, where their opponents have nowhere to run, they have no choice but to kill.

A betta makes a very peaceful community fish with a few conditions:

1. Its tankmates are not fellow bettas, or do not resemble bettas (like male guppies, which have long, colourful fins.)
2. Its tankmates are not aggressive fish (such as barbs or sharks.)

That's it. For some reason, people seem to perceive this as "bettas will eat anything that crosses its path." Plecos, corydora catfish, white cloud mountain minnows, rasboras, various types of tetras, snails, frogs, otos, platies, mollies, ghost shrimps, zebra danios...all these make good tankmates for bettas.

Of course, you must make sure that the betta's tankmates thrive under the same water conditions (hardness, temperature) as the betta, and that you have sufficient space for all the fish (usually at least 5 gallons, absolute minimum). You might also want to plant your tank more heavily so that the tankmates have places to hide in case of spurts of aggression.

I have a 10 gallon tank with a molly, swordtail, and 2 female guppies. I just put in a betta 2 days ago. Everyone is getting along fine, the molly tried to bite the betta, but the betta chased it back, and the molly just kept out the betta's way since then. The swordtail and the betta just completely ignore each other. The female guppies aren't fancy, so it's not a problem. I guess it all depends on the betta itself.

Well i would think only a betta since they are fighting fish and i dont think you really want your fish dying because your betta was killing it.

Small fish would be the easiest for them to eat.

according to the many fish that I have attempted to put in with Socortease... NONE!! he bites them all till dead. I have even tried very short finned. I know he is one of the most agressive though, even attacking your finger if you put it in or tap the glass.
