Clownfish live in coral reefs, specifically in the tropical regions of the world, such as the Great Barrier Reef, many parts of Indonesia, and other tropical seas as well, such as the Pacific Ocean (near the Equator). They live in mutual symbiosis with the sea anemone, and their environment consists mostly of rocks, coral reefs, sea anemones, and underwater plants. Their symbiosis with the sea anemones can be categorised in the mutual symbiosis, because when the clownfish is chased by a larger predator, they instantly hide in the sea anemone. Note that their skin has a certain slime that protects them from the sea anemone's stinging tentacles, which is also poisonous. The tentacles sting the predator, which is then stunned or even killed. The sea anemone can eat the predator fish. The clownfish is safe from predators, and the anemone gets some food.

Clown fish (also called the Clown Anemonefish) are small fish that live among anemone (fish-eating animals that look like undersea flowers and have hundreds of poisonous tentacles). The anemone's tentacles kill other fish that touch them, but the Clown fish seems to be immune to its poison. Scientists think that the Clown fish may be coated with a mucous that protects it from the poison. The anemone protects the Clown fish from most predators, who know not to go near the anemone's tentacles. The clown fish helps the anemone by cleaning it (as it eats detritus) and perhaps by scaring away predators of the anemone.
