but the person does it when the animal isn't even around! just like..instead of humming or wistling, they'll just meowing.

If I'm having a problem teaching a dog to "Speak" (bark) I'll bark at them so they get the idea, and it works. I'll meow at a dog to get a head tilt for photo shoots or film work. But if people really think they are talking dog/cat it's time for the men in the white jackets. I really don't know anyone that thinks they can speak dog/cat, and I'm happy about that. So what you're thinking is correct! All the best;~)

It is normal to talk to them, yes, because this is how people communicate with their animals, and yes, they do understand. It is also normal sometimes to meow in a specific way, because animals make some specific sounds to express certain feelings, and they will understand better if you meow to them. Not when they are not around, though.

It is normal, i talk to them, sometimes i bark like ruff ruff to play with them. My my older dog understand me in English, Lao and hand signs. If i don't want them to be in a certain place i tell them to get out of there they actually get out. If your talking about barking.meowing when there's not pet/animals around then that is not normal.

I think it is normal to talk to your animals. Animals understand tone and can pick up on the message behind the words. I wouldn't try to mimic them unless I was trying to make them laugh. Which still may not come across right and they will think you stupid or actually may laugh.

Animal lovers can behave pretty strangely sometimes; think "eccentric". I meow back to my cat at times, but I'm just imitating her, I dont think I can actually speak cat.

Hello; LOL, I taught my dog to "speak" by saying the word speak, and then barking myself... he was a tiny little JRT, and he learned pretty quickly! I sometimes will just say "ruff" to him, just to get a rise outa him; as I said, he's a JRT, so it often doesn't take much!

I don't know, maybe you just aren't a dog lover!

I stopped asking what was "normal" human behavior- LONG ago. Judge for yourself (and always keep alittle catnip or a few dog-treats at hand- just in case). :)
