Read the abstract. There should be an abstract company in your town, and the records will be at the courthouse of your county. Every time I've bought a house, the abstract came with it. I keep mine in a safe deposit box, and turn it over when I sell. When anything is done, the abstract company brings it up to date. I have the whole court records of the last owner's bankruptcy in mine. It even has the certificate of when the place was termited last.

If you bought your home you should have an abstract that was given to you from the previous owner. Any lawyer that took care of the paper work for you should tell the previous owner to give you an abstract. There is a lot of info in an abstract concerning deeds of trust, warranty deeds, quit claim deeds, etc. with names of previous owners. Hope this helps.

In addition to finding the records listed above, someone once told me that you can ask the local Sheriff's office for a list of all calls to that address in the past so many years. I never cared enough to try it, but it's probably true. Public records and all...
