... quite attractive, actually. But, she believes she's getting lower tips (%) than the other waitstaff. She's not sure what she's doing wrong, or even IF she's doing something wrong. She averages about 17-20% per gross dollar which seems about right to me so it's possible that the other waitstaff are just pulling her leg in telling her what they make.

This is her first serving job and it's just a temporary thing but she's feeling like she's not doing a good job. She's never gotten a complaint from any customer (been there a month and a half) and in fact she's been commended a few times by customers. The place is a mid- to up-scale restaurant with latin cuisine.

Do you think that she's making about the right amount and that the other waitstaff are just pulling her leg -- or, is 17-20% low?

(Sorry for the long question. I just wanted to get all the info out there. Also, I asked this question on another category but I thought it would post here. Sorry for the repeat.)

If she is averageing 17-20% before tip out she is doing well. There will be nights that she jsut has bad guests and makes 10-15% AFTER tip out. Those nights are less than desireable but tthey still pay the rent.

To maximize her profit she should focus on the basics... Full glasses/refills, timely service with a smile, being sincere.

I reside in a tourist town so I always ask my guests where tehy are from. Chances are you know something about their town and can use the info to your advantage. Thats when you can make their experience personable and you start seeing 20-30% tips coming your way.

On a special note: I have given some guest exemplarary perfect service and recieved horrible tips and given awful service for one reason or another and recieved great tips.

Some times its just out of your hands.

I'm a waitress, and 17-20% is good. 15% is usually given if service is okay/typical, and 20% is the service exceeded the customer's expectations. Anything above 20% is fabulous.

If that is low for her restaurant, which I would be surprised at, advise her to be more friendly and affirmative. Have her introduce herself before taking an order, it tends to make customers fell more at ease. Tell her to be on top of drinks at all times--make sure no one's glass is ever empty. make sure every need of the customer is met, and thank them at the end of the meal for stopping by, and wish them a good day/evening.

She's doing excellent at that percentage. I worked for some nice places before, but the area was filled with cheapskates. No matter how much the bill was, no matter how well you took care of them, no matter how friendly you were, you were ecstatic to get $5 on a $70 meal. So she's doing great!

It sounds like her tips are where they should be. However she might want to try the Middas touch. I did a paper on it in college and it worked. Basically, she should just try touching the shoulder of her customers. Something appropriate and not offensive. Tell her to test it out and see if it helps? She should record her tips % difference and determine if it is valuable.

Good Luck

I've been a server for years now. 17-20 percent is great! As far as being complimented, there are not alot of people who will be verbal about it. Accept the tip as how pleased they were with your service!

She's doing fine. When I was in college, I made about the same, and other servers always said they made more. Maybe they did, but I find that hard to believe. 15% is average, so tell her not to worry.
