I see a lot of places like libraries or buses where there are signs, saying NO FOOD, DRINKS, or SMOKING. But they allow people to chew gum noisily in public libraries. I thought the library was supposed to be very quiet.

In Colorado there is no tax on food and they don't tax gum so I guess it is.

I think technically it is considered food. I believe it depends upon the circumstances. I think the library does not want anyone to get anything on the books so they ban eating, drinking and of course smoking is banned everywhere. In that case I would not consider gum as food since civilized people keep it in their mouths.

As far as banning it in the library because of those loud chewers, I don't think it would work. People who are that ill-mannered and inconsiderate would not hesitate to speak out loud, slam down backpacks on tables, etc. It wouldn't just be the gum, they would find some other annoying thing to do.

This won't help you have quiet in the library, but did you know that it has been proven that the motion of chewing gum helps you be more alert and learn better? I just found that out the other day.

It's not food, but if it's being used noisily I would say it's inappropriate for a library. That said, it's more fun to make noise than be in a library ... get out and have some fun!

Although gum is considered a food by the FDA ("This is not a low-calorie food), I wouldn't say it's a full meal unless you're Nicole Richie.

However, people who chew/pop gum loudly in a library should get their butts kicked out for being annoying - I can'at stand that!

I also hate people who chomp gum. The same people probably talk with their mouth full.

I don't think gum is food because you don't swallow or digest it.
