in gold, silver and crystal, mystery gift was used to communicate between two games, to give gifts to both cartridges.
in fire, leaf, and emerald, it is different. if you go to an event, you can pass your mystery gift over a machine called a "hot spot" and you might get a ticket to allow you to get certain legendary pokemon. however, since there will be NO MORE events for third gen pokemon games, you can't do anything more with it. (third gen is fire, leaf, emerald, ruby, and sapphire)
what is an event, you ask? that is when you go to http://www.pokemon.com and they say that nintendo representatives will be going to a place, and then you go there too, to meet these people (yes, in real life) to get certain things, such as the mew event on september 30, 2006 held in every toys 'r us store in the USA from like noon to three pm

1) One of thoes events is called the Nintendo Event. Where does it happen? It happens in Real Life. They give out special Pokemon (Pokemon with special stats, movesets, etc.) and items (example: Azure Flute which lets you get to Arceus). These Pokemon and items will be downloaded to your game (If you enabled Mystery Gift).
2) For more info, check http://www.serebii.net/diamondpearl/mysterygift.shtml

you have to be there for a nintendo event. such as new york city or japan. they occur not very often, but yes you need the mysetery gift. the mystery gift does nothing unless you are at a nintendo event. im not sure if this is truee but i heard it is required for pokemon battle revolution. i wouldnt know, i dont have that game, but i do have diamond.
