I'M A GIRL AND DON'T KNOW SH*T ABOUT CARS, SO I'M JUST GOING TO EXPLAIN THIS THE BEST I CAN, OKAY? DON'T MAKE FUN!

I drive a '93 Pontiac Grand Am SE (4-cylinder)

Two weeks ago, I had the heater core replaced and since, the car has ran fine. Today I was driving home (didn't have the car running for more than ten min) and I noticed a horrible burning rubber smell, which I thought could have been the car beside me, but it wasn't. I noticed the AC was making a weird hissing sound and the cold air stopped coming out. Keep in mind, the tempature guage never got even close to hot. Whenever I turned the AC off, the sound went away. I pulled up in the driveway, shut the car off, popped the hood and white smoke was coming out. The smoke was coming from that black belt that wraps around the side of the ulternator. It continued to smoke and stink 'til the belt just popped right off. My hubby looked at it & said the "tension pulley and the ulternator is fine."

So, what's wrong then?

There isn't much room there, but if you look closely tou'll see that this belt also went around your air conditioner (look below the alternator) If the alternator and the tension pully are fine, then I believe that the air conditioner was the source of your problem , Sounds like the air conditioner siezed up and forced the belt to slide by (with great friction and heat)
This is confirmed by the fact that the air conditioner stopped working first and that the sound went away when you turned the A/C off.

I think your a/c's compressor is stuck/jammed causing the belt to slip and overheat. Try not turning on the a/c for the whole trip next time you drive the car, and if the belt is not smoking, then it's the compressor or its clutch. Take it to a mechanic to make sure of the problem.

A possibility is that one of the pulleys locked up. Power steering, ac pump, smog pump, alternator, fan, tensioner. There are many, and any one of them could have locked up but by the sounds of it, the ac pump locked up. another possibility is that the belt got caught in something not allowing it to rotate properly killing all accecories and the crankshaft kept spinning burning your belt and eventually breaking it in too. hope this helps. But either way i suggest haveing a mechanic and look at it, and for safety's sake dont drive it tow it to the mechaninc.

the belt is dead now, it may look new, but its dead,
Your A/C compressor froze up on you, causing the loud squealing. there is a plug on the A/C compressor (next to the pulley (the thing the belt goes around)) that you can unplug until you can get it (the compressor) fixed. GM cars use the AC compressor in the "defrost" mode also, so unplugging it for now is a good idea so that you do not kill another belt.

either the belt was really worn out bad on it or one of the pulleys locked up on it,or the compressor for the air conditioner may have locked up,if that one runs one belt try turning the compressor by hand,it may have locked up on it,that's how they do when they go out,i hope its not,but there's a good possibility it might have gone bad, good luck on it .

The belt was probably just really worn. Get it replaced and see what happens.

Sounds like your A/C compresser took a dump on you
