Assuming you mean between people who would have the option of being attracted to each other: Yes, it is very possible to stay friends for an entire lifetime.
I don't there's any full-proof way to keep both sides seeing it as platonic, though, since even if you can manage to control your emotions and reactions that tightly, you can't do the same for the other person. But, that's not the same as saying, in every friend-to-friend relationship there's got to be a crush there sometime. It's probably either a bit more or less likely to get a crush on a friend, since you'd know the person very well (a plus or a minus, depending on whether or not they find the traits in the other person attractive and since knowing someone for a long time can sometimes be mentally stored under family). I guess what I'm trying to say in that ramble is that it can swing either way.

Yes I think that they are. I have had a few platonic friendships and they did work. The key to it is that both of the people involved can't have a sexual attraction to each other or it wont work.

They become possible when you try being sex partners and it didn't work but you really really like the person. I've had two relationships end up like that and we're still good friends. A third person and I have been platonic for 32 years because we never had any sexual attraction but we're both artists.
