I know a baby that sat in a front-facing carseat before she was one year. A little more than a month before she turned a year, and she was over 20 pounds and no longer fit in the newborn carseat. Her feet would bend because they were so close to the seat. She's always been very long and a bit chubby.

Most people will say 1 year AND 20 pounds. However, the doctor said it was all right for her to be in a front-facing carseat. Mainly considering it was winter and the parents could no longer put her in a rear-facing carseat with a coat because the straps wouldn't go over her.

I'd say wait until the baby meets the normal requirement for 1 year and 20 pounds, or if the doctor says it's okay. Try to stick with the rear-facing carseat as long as possible until the baby reaches the 1 year and 20 Ibs point.

20 pounds AND 12 months.

Both - not just one. If baby outgrows the infant carseat/carrier by weight before first bday, change over to a rear-facing convertible type carseat. They usually go from 5-40lbs. Start w/ rear facing, then can use well into toddlerhood front facing.

I actually prefer to just start w/ the convertible type. They can out grow those infant "buckets" so quickly.

It's 20+ pounds AND one year of age.

My son's pediatrician said it is very important to wait until the first birthday because prior to 12 months, an average baby's neck muscles are not developed enough to handle the "whip lash" motion/forces of a forward facing crash.

*in my opinion, this is one of the problems with the popularity of the "infant carrier" car seat. Once the baby outgrows the infant carrier, the parents assume they are ready for a forward facing convertible, when in actuality the baby should be in a REAR facing convertible until their first birthday!!

1 yr AND 20 lbs.

note the AND, many babies are 20 lbs long before they turn 1, but they are not developed enough to sit forward facing.

one year, any sooner if you get in a car accident they could sub-stain serious brain damage because the outer wall of the brain hasn't thickened enough to protect the fragile brain from the skull bones. rear facing car seat minimize the motion of the head movement in a car accident
