I don't know what the DS gear is but 'L' typically is Low for low speeds and high end torque.
You generally do not use this gear, it is for very steep hills or when you get stuck on a hill....
you can also use this to slow down in emergencies since it downshifts your car, but do not get into the habit of using this gear.
I've only used this gear maybe once a year at the most, you generally only need 'D'
read your owners manual if you have it

Virtually all the time you will use D . People who pull trailers on hills. are driving on ice, or are racing may want to specifically use different gears. But for most every day applications use D and R and ignor the others

Sounds like a Mercedes. I used to put my 300D (diesel) into L at stops, and floor it once a day or so to keep it cleaned out. Unless you'r car is shifting earlier than you want it to, leave it in D.
