First off there were two 400's in 1975 so you need to always put the model in your questions. One was a KX400 and the other was the KZ400. The KZ had electric start so maybe you are talking about a KX?????????? I'll give you answers for both so you will need to give me 20 points. LOL.

KX. This has a pair of stator coils under the flywheel and a CDI box. If it has been sitting that long you may have corrosion in the wiring plugs, kill switch or ??? The flywheel cover may have had moisture in it that destroyed the coils. Start with a new spark plug and bypass the kill switch. If not those it will be expensive to repair.

KZ. This is a battery ignition with a single set of points. Charge battery and verify it is good. Pull the point cover and check the point surface and gap. Chances are it is rusted from sitting and not making contact or grounding out. It will probably need new points and possibly a condenser if the cover had water in it. Also check the coil for cracks. They often split open with age and moisture gets in them and then they are shot.

You can e-mail me for more details if needed.

First I hope you have replaced the battery...then with key on, and bike in neutral, coke on, kick start. what happens? I really need more information...but to check for the pluf firing...pull the plug wire off the spark plug...take another spark plug and put it into the end of plug wire and then place the spark plug on the engine or frame to ground, then hit electric start, or kick start..so that you can see if the bike is even firing...if the plug doesn't fire--spark would jump from plug to the body where you grounded it..no fire at all, could be several things, bad coil, wiring from ignition, fuses, relays, etc...need to information to help you...email me back at gotspeed7883@yahoo.com

open up spark plug after soaking with some solvent and remove fix cable back, hold it near the metalic frame and kick and try if it sparks
