Is it:

I was wondering what kind of writing are you expecting.
or
I was wondering what kind of writing were you expecting.

This is in response to a job application email. Also, how should I end this? I haven't applied yet. I'm just asking the recruiter what kind of information I should send them.

The wording seems awkward to me either way. And as presented, its a question, but not a question. And that's part of the problem.

I'd prefer a simple request, such as "Please advise the nature of the writing that you would expect of me." Or even simpler if possible. When in doubt, go straight to the point.

Neither. It's "I was wondering what kind of writing you were expecting."

But I think there are better ways to express this thought in this context. How about "What information are you looking for?" or "Please specify the information you would like to see."

As for closing, it never hurts to say something like "Thank you for your time and attention."

Actually, it would be:

I was wondering what kind of writing you are expecting.

Using "are you" implies a question. "You are" is a statement.

You would not use the past tense (were) because that implies that the recipient of your response no longer has any expectations.

I would change the whole sentence because it appears to me that you are asking a question. I would say : "I am wondering what type of writing you are expecting, is it ..... or.....?"
