Some con said we were doing that.
Criminalizing speech means passing LAWS banning certain types of speech or freedom of expression. For example, like what conservatives did during the Red Scare, banning books and political parties, and accusing dissenters of sedition and treason.
Meanwhile, liberal organizations like the ACLU to this day defend the freedom of expression of all Americans including the klan. While I disagree with the right-wing racist views of the klan, I too defend their right to say what they believe in.

PS.
College students shouting down speakers may not be nice, but it is not "criminalizing speech". Cons have their own way of objecting to speech they don't like through non-legislative means.
For example, getting that Reagan movie canceled on CBS or ABC.

I never thought I'd see the Klan going to the ACLU to defend their rights...I feel good that the Klan would have to ask a public defense of liberty to defend them....gee, maybe the Klan will one day accept blacks as members.
To biddoogirl, it's one thing to criminalize something and quite another to ridicule it. Maybe one day the Republican party will be as "understanding" as the KKK.
I agree with "collegedebt" that any Democrat or Republican can take us in a bad direction...that's why we vote and TRY to keep them honest, but I will never vote Republican again...independent or Democrat for me

Not passed but they are trying!!
Rep. Louise Slaughter of New York, a friend of Senator Clinton, introduced a bill in 2005 to bring the Fairness Doctrine back. She said that conservative radio is "a waste of good broadcast time, and a waste of our airwaves." She has also sought to include cable TV in her censorship net. The bill had a number of Democratic co-sponsors, including another friend of Hillary’s who urged her to run for Senate in 2000, Rep. Charles Rangel. Now that the Democrats have taken control of Congress and are eying the White House in 2008, the initiative to bring back government regulation of political speech on the airwaves is picking up traction. Yet another, Clinton ally, Democratic New York Congressman Maurice Hinchey, is pushing a bill in this session along with Presidential candidate Rep. Dennis Kucinich. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is intending to do the same in the Senate.

well verbal harrassment can be taken as a hate crime under the right circumstances.
There was a man arrested for harrasment with hate crime enhancement for using the N word at a black referee at a sporting incident a few years back named Lonnie Rae.
I didnt see any evidence of the ACLU rushing to defend him.

Both parties are capable and guilty of censorship; don't fool yourself into think anyone is above it. While I have no sources off hand in the United States I would point to "left"-leaning regimes outside the US such as that of Communist Russia after the Second World War.

Well, there was all that attempt to censor American Music by a popular Dem's wife. Remember that? Gore? PMRC? Keep running around claiming no dem has tried to criminalize speech. She tried and failed that then pushed for massive censoring of the music industry. I'm sure you didn't want that brought up huh?

I don't know of any off hand, but when it comes to politically correct, then yes, the liberals have become thought and word police.
