Keep your clutch in and shift into 1st. It won't wear out your clutch keeping it in neutral as there is nothing moving. If you try to engage the gear with the clutch out it will make an awful noise and THAT is what's going to hurt your clutch. I usually sit at a red light with both brake depressed and clutch in and gear in 1st,,,ready to move.

If I understand you, (the word "engage" is the confusing one)
You should step on the clutch, shift into 1st, then slowly lift your foot from the clutch.
If you do it in any other order, you will stall, break the transmission, lunge forword, or all 3 at once.
Do not worry about the clutch, it is designed to take years of use.

The only time you would not want to start in 1st gear is if your transmission is very low geared, such as in a truck with heavy duty tranny. In this case you would start in 2nd. in all cars and most light trucks, shift to first gear after you come to a stop, then proceed thru your normal shift pattern as you accelerate.

when at idle always, put in neutral and take foot off the clutch pedal, while hold brake pedal, this will help save the clutch disc, and the clutch and master cylinders.
