work on those days? I'm not talking about cops or DPW having to run a snow plow on Christmas. Well, even still!

Then maybe society shouldn't promote these damn things, then. Just another excuse to stimulate the economy.

God, I've had two people making the "Christmas" comment. I'm not just talking about specific holiday I was using it as an example of a mass holiday people celebrate.

Then there should be no exploitation of the holiday. Our current economic paradigm does not allow it. I.e. we're too dependent on other institutions no matter what. Yay! Life blows!

It is messed up that someone would have to work during these times however unless everyone is going to just stay in their house we will always need someone to work. Cops, Doctors, etc. It is all part of the job when you sign up. Sometimes life is not fair.

The world has to go on... People have heart attacks, be it Christmas or not. People need to get prescriptions... And Christmas is the biggest travel day of the year so someone needs to drive the busses and plow the streets.

holidays are a huge time for murder and suicide and theft and lots of other problems. So cops have to be on hand. And if there were no guards at the prisons, who would keep an eye on the prisoners? And what about all that TV that people love to watch during the holidays? That doesn't just spontaneously generate itself.

*sigh* I can give more examples but you see the pattern.. life goes on. Plus not everyone celebrates the same holidays.

Exactly which 'holidays' are you thinking of? And if Christmas, remember that there are many people who do not consider themselves Christian who have no problem working on this day. People in certain businesses, especially the hospitality business, such as restaurants, hotels, etc. expect to work when other people have the day off. It is the type of business they do. Do you want all the staff of hospitals to suddenly take 'holidays' off? No country in world has a holiday of any kind where every single person has the day off. The majority do, and that is as good as it gets.
