Sometimes I will see one poster get like 6 or 7 thumbs up and one thumbs down, and yet that poster does not get the "best answer." Instead the "best answer" is sometimes given to a person who didn't even get a single thumbs up or down rating OR got more thumbs down then thumbs up.

How can the voting and the thumbs up/down system be so completely opposite of each other for some posters? You would think they would line up at least somewhat.

LIGER,

Both the thumbs up/down system and the voting are based on people agreeing or disagreeing with the answer.

It makes me wonder why the results are SOMETIMES (with some specific posters) the exact opposite of each other.

MR TADS,

You can if you have more then one screename.

2007-08-06 16:23:38 · update #2

What I meant is that for example, person A posts a question and does not choose the best answer. Person B answers the question and then gets on his other screenames to vote on his answer so that it will become the best answer.

If the asker does not choose the best answer, the best answer goes to the person who got the most "votes".

thumbs down means nothing in regards to points, you can have 5 thumbs down and no thumbs up,you will still get 10 points if you get best answer. you can vote for yourself if the question goes to voting,it is within the rules. the problem is people with multiple accounts that vote or award themselves best answer. there are also groups of friends that vote for each others answers and award each other best answer. when you ask a question, pick the best answer yourself,it stops the point gamers from gaining points off your question. i can't figure out why they cheat to get worthless points. these groups of friends can also use the blocking feature against you in an attempt to get you suspended.

added. for Nana, you can tell your answer when a question is in voting,it is the one with the gray abuse flag. you can't report yourself,so your abuse flag always appears gray to you.

Because the thumbs up and down, is just public opinion. The asker posts a question and it is up to them to vote for the answer that best suits what they were looking for. When I go in and vote for answers, I read the question, then I form an opinion, then I read the answers and the one that best matches what I would have said is the one that gets my vote.

I do not go by the thumbs up or thumbs down. But to answer the other part of your question, yes, you can and I have accidentally voted on my own answer. I have answered a question that has been out to vote for more than a year. Then when voting, I would go by the same policy I just mentioned. That being said, I have ended up voting for my own answer without even remembering that I answered that question.

How I realized what had happened was a few minutes after casting my vote, I would get a notice of a best answer and it would be the question that I had just voted on.

Mr. Tads is wrong. You can vote for your own best answer.

You can't give a thumbs up or down to your own answer. Anybody else can give the thumbs. There can be only 4 answers, say, but 100 people could log on and give ratings if they so desired, an answer to a question is not a prerequisite for voting thumbs or best answer.

It depends on who is logged on at the time of the voting compared to when the question was asked. Sometimes I get thumbs down for a certain answer and on a another day I might get all thumbs up for a similar answer. I have voted for answers that have all thumbs down and sometimes that answer already has some other votes despite the thumbs down. I have also been voted best answer despite thumbs down right after the answering.

I've seen proof that there is a person who participates in politics has done this in another category. When it's a reasonable question the thumbs up/down system can be come closer to what gets picked. But most of the time the questions on politics are slanted politically one way or the other to begin with so it is sometimes very off.

Oh without a doubt im sure quite a few do. On the other hand sometimes teh questioner gives a best answer to someone they like even though others got alot more thumbs up. I dislike that more than voting for yourself sometimes.

The thumbs up/down is just a silly way for people to say whether they agree or disagree with an answer (though that's not what it's intented to mean.) Sometimes the best answer really is one that got neither thumbs up or down.

that's a query of ethics, some think of that's a style of cheating different do not. especially there are different voter to the question so that's debateable despite in case you will p.c.. up many terrific solutions that way.

askers or voters choose. thumbs up count for points, thumbs down are only a mental downer. thumbs up or down don't have any bearing on best answer unless the asker or voter uses them as a guide.
