T-Mobile is a gsm carrier as in they are a sim carrier and a sim is the best option because if your phone breaks you can always take the sim card out and buy a new phone. Or you an even buy a new phone on eBay and you wouldn't have to go to the t-mobile store to upgrade it which adds a 2 year contract. I'm not sure if you're looking for this answer, because I really don't understand your question.

A SIM card is the best for international traveling T-Mobile has some of the best international coverage out of the four major carriers. The best part about the SIM card is if you plan to stay for longer periods of time you can go to a local cell carrier and buy a SIM card that has prepaid mins. to use in your phone so you wont an ultra high charges on your bill for calling internationally. SIM cards allow you to change number in an instance but more importantly most of the world still uses GSM networks which only use SIM cards.

A better option for what? T-Mobile requires the use of a sim card to even operate the phone. I don't understand the question.

You will need to make sure you have a phone that will work where you are going. If you have a quad band phone, you are all set no matter what.

Here's a trick - works really well...
If you plan to use your cell to get incoming calls try this:
When a call comes in, immediately reject the call - caller ID works almost everywhere so you will know who called. Then, if they left a message, your message indicator will come on. Use an ATT calling card to call back and get your message - a LOT cheaper than using your phone! Then you can call that person back at a fraction of the normal cost. This also save the hassle of switching SIMs, etc.

The cards are cheapest (I think) at Walmart / Sam's Club.

Hope this helps!

Have a safe trip!

In some countries, find one of those little kiosks that sell the paper phones. They sell for about $15 and you just throw them away when you leave the country. Many T-mobile phones are compatible and you can pick up the proper card in what ever country you are in. BUT, you may find the call rate back to the US is a much better deal at the local coffee shop and do your calling via the net.
