My daughter will be 8, and in the second grade this fall. We have participated in Girl Scouts as a Daisy, and then as a Brownie. Those were not great experiences, as the first leader was a dud and not good with the children at all. The second year, we worked hard selling cookies, and ended up with nothing due to a dishonest parent and mismanaged money/cookies. I am about to give up finding a decent troop for my daughter to grow up with, but she is set on being a Girl Scout.

The best way to get the troop you want is to start your own. Contact your council and see if they have a waiting list, and recruit the parents to share the workload.

Not up for that? Ask if there are troops you can visit. Check and see what the troop has done, ask if the books are available for viewing (they should be). Even then, volunteer! The more that the parents help, the better the troop will be.

Hello Michael:

I hope that the past two years have not soured you on the Scouting program. I see that you are willing to give it another try. Call your service center directly. They should be listed in your phone book under Girl Scouts. Tell the receptionist where you live, and ask to speak to your coordinator (I'm not sure if that is the correct title, I'm in Boy Scouts). Tell her that you are looking for a Troop for your daughter and relay the history. She should do a good job of linking you up with a good troop. You may have to drive a bit out of your way.

Keep on Scoutin'
