India was used and manipulated to become dependent on British rule;

1. Sustaining crops and resources were illimintaed in favor of cash crops like indigo which devasteded India economy when they could no longer sell that crop.

2. Natural resourses like salt were controlled to extend Brisih control.

3. manufacturing was limited....textiles for instance.

When Ghandi lead is passive revolt...he encouraged development of self sustaining trades like weaving cotton, obtaing salt from the sea and the like to win freedom. However, argueably India's dependence on British trade force the use of a passive resistance because India remains tied to British trade and manufactured goods following India's independence.

There were limited resources for education. Individuals still followed Gurukula system, unless there was big educational institutions like Aligar University, or Government Aided Schools(built by patrons mostly Indians). Education was a rich man's reality and poorman's elusive dream.

Well, I don't know about education, but I would assume it was like everything else; as crappy as it is now; but they were able to blame it on someone besides their own leaders.

~Overall, I'm not sure - but the English speaking Indians knew how to spell "about" and "independence". You could learn from them.
