Quint was on the USS Indianapolis. It delivered the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima.

"So, eleven hundred men went in the water, three hundred and sixteen men come out, and the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

Just to be anal the ship sank on June the 30th.

As others have pointed out, the shark story is about the Indianapolis and was told in Jaws.

In Hunt for Red October, the aircraft carrier captain tells a story about Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) - he was in a helicopter crash while a student at the Naval Academy and had to learn to walk again and finished his coursework from a hospital bed.

I think that was from Jaws not Red October, but the ship wreck I think you are talking about is the Indianapolis, it delivered The A bomb and was on such a secret mission it took abot 3 days before they realised it was missing.

Jaws is the movie Robert Shaw is eulogising on the demise of the USS Indianapolis, as it is a tattoo he had removed, when he Hooper and Brody were having a "Best Scar" competition.

Arguably one of the best monologues in cinema over the past 30 years, as the timbre of Shaw's voice drops and you are drawn to the character as he described his own version of Dante's Inferno watching so many of his friend die.

i think you have your movies confused. that didnt happen in red october but in jaws the character quint had been on the uss Indianapolis. it sank in w II and many of the sailors in the water were killed by sharks.
