I am a 20 year old African American guy, and my mother does not want me to wear a durag on my head in public.

My mother says wearing a durag is a ghetto and gangster thing.

If you can't picture white people or your grandpa wearing something you wear without looking ridiculous, it's probably ghetto to some people. I just see a durag as casual wear. If I don't want to worry about my braids getting messed up and I might be playing football during the day or resting my head on something, I might leave my durag on. If your braids just need to get redone, a durag is essential. Obviously, it is just a style for most people, so your mom has a point.

Well I had that same problem with my parents when I was growing up. My dad told me I look like a straight up hoodlum when I wore them. I didn't think nothing was wrong by wearing them because I wore them just to keep my hair looking nice and tidy. Then he hip me to the straight up facts. I learned that people did look at me as a gangsta, troublemaker, or some low income ghetto trash based on what I wore and the durags. Eventhough I wasn't this type of person, they seem to put me in that category of people. When most people see you with the durags on, it's just an automatic response that you are a threat to society based on what is perpetrated in the black community that we are trouble. Some people wear it for a fashion statement because they see on tv that the rappers are wearing it. My dad always told me that when you go out into the public look presentable and clean. Don't try to be something you're not. (A wanna be gangsta).

I'm 27 and I wear durags, but they're for my waves. A lot of cats wear them today cuz it looks fly under a cap. But a lot of other cats wear them because they have become apart of the official/unofficial apparel of a hustler, pimp, thug etc. I f you wear it, be prepared to be stereotyped. However, you should also be prepared to tell people to mind their own Fu*king business.
