My computer is really slow and keeps telling me that my computer has been infected with a Trojan(i have no clue what that is). I also have a lot of pop-ups about my computer being infected with a Trojan and alot of anti-spyware & anti-virus programs that it is telling me that i have to download them. I haven't downloaded any of them because im afraid that it might mess up my computer even more. What are some good reputable anti-spyware programs that i can use and what is up with my computer? Someone help me!

Hi Sarah!
I know exactly what your going through!. I've had this problem for about a month, and I started downloading one anti-virus program after another. (including: Disk Cleaners,Registry Cleaners---You name it!).
I finally called my Internet Provider, and had a Technician come to my house to see what the problem was,and this is what he did:
(1) First he deleted files, that I no longer needed or used.
(2) Then he downloaded "Spybot" to my desktop.

The program scanned my computer for: Viruses,Trojans,Adware,Unsafe Cookies (you name it),and the process took about 10 mins. After the scan was complete,it listed the many viruses I had,and with a click of the button, this program wiped them out. He suggested I do a desktop scan at least once a week, depending on how often I use the Internet.
Now I have faster downloads, uploads, and no pop ups. Turn your "Pop-Up" blockers "ON". This can be done from your toolbars. Never trust a "pop-up",that tells you to download an anti-spyware program, for these programs ARE spyware.
Good Luck!.
(PS) I bought Norton Internet Security 2007,and it was the main source of my problem. I shut it off,and now my computer works perfectly.

Download the free trial version of trojanhunter http://trojanhunter.com/ ,. it will run a scan, and find the Trojans and try to fix the infected files.
Anti-virus software is not always effective against Trojans, which are software programs that get downloaded when you use the Internet, and which do things like make your computer available to someone Else's use when you are on line. ( That's why it runs so slow- another computer may be dragging your CPU power for something else, like running porn.) The free trial version is good for 30 days. But one scan will do the job, until you mess it up again!

Anti Virus/Spy/ad

If you are connect a computer you should have Anti virus, Anti ad/spy ware protection installed on your computer and kept updated

Some of thes sites offer a free scan and an evaluation version of their product.

Norton and Mcafee have very good packages for all the above

McAfee
http://ca.mcafee.com/?langid=34&cid=10416

Norton
http://symantic.com/home_homeoffice/products/index.jsp

Spysweeper has been noted a one of the best but is is a little slower the the other.

Spysweeper by Webroot

AVG Free is a basic virus only protection with no tech support. My advice on free protection is use at own risk.

You have Spyware or viruses.

You may need to take the computer to a competent technician and have it repaired.

You can try these steps on your own.

Click on "Start"

Click on "Run"

type in "msconfig". DO NOT USE THE QUOTES

Press the ENTER key on the Keyboard

A box will pop up

Look for the tab along the top of the box that is labeled "Startup"

Click on this tab and a box will become visible

In the lower right corner of this box, right above the "help" button is a button called "Disable All".

Click on the "Disable All Button"

Click on the Boot.ini tab.

Select Safe mode and also select "network".

Click on the "Apply" Button

Click on the "OK" Button

When the computer asks to be allowed to reboot, tell it OK.

The computer will boot into safe mode but you will still be able to get on the Internet.

Run Spybot and update it. Download all the updates and wait for spybot to shut down and restart.

When spybot restarts and gives you the interface, click on the immunize button to the left. If is tells you to immunize, click on the green plus sign beside the word "immunize". After it immunizes, click on the "Search & Destroy" button in the column on the left. Next, click on the "check for problems" button and start the scan.

When the scan finishes, choose the "Fix Selected Problems" and wait for it to finish.

What this does is:

The scan cleans out a large amount of the common spyware, and is a good first strike. Always scan in safe mode.

Immunize sets up Internet Explorer to block known spyware sites from gaining access to your computer. Even if you go to a website that wants to load spyware, your computer will refuse the connection, helping to keep it clean.

Unlike some of the posts here say, Spybot gets along with all antivirus software. Leave it on your system and run it once a week. Be sure to immunize each time.

So much for a first strike, now on to the heavy hitters: Viruses.

Forget Norton and Mcafee, they are awful.

Go to this page, and fill it out, choose the product "eScan Anti Virus (AV) for Windows"
http://www.mwti.com/feedback/form.asp?

Load this up (it will load in safe mode), update it, and scan the computer. This program is free for a two week trial, and you can uninstall it when you finish using it. Or buy it for $25, the best computer money you will ever spend.

RUN THE E-SCAN OVER AND OVER UNTIL IT RUNS CLEAN 2 TIMES IN A ROW.

After you finish go back and choose a normal boot
(Start>Run>type in "msconfig" without the quotes, go to Boot.ini. tab and deselect "Safe Boot", then go to the startup and click the "Enable all" button.

Let you computer reboot and have at it.

Udate your antivirus and scan your coputer in safe mode. After you remove virus, I recommend you use firefox browser. It is safer than IE. It can prevent viruses such as worm, trojan and etc. The newest official edition of firefox can be downloaded from http://www.mollzia.com

Ad-Aware, Spybot - Search & Destroy, AVG Anti-Spyware, Norton/Mcaffee Virus Scanner.

I use Ad-Aware and Mcaffee. They work great. Ad-aware is free and Mcaffee is free because I use Comcast.
