I recently signed a one year lease with my fiancee on an apartment that he was sharing with his grandmother temporarily. She was planning to move out in a month. Now we find out it will be AT LEAST six months if not a year before she can get into elderly housing. We are living out of boxes and most of my stuff is being stored elsewhere. I don't really have any other place to go and it is really cramped here and I don't have space for any of my belongings. We would leave and let her have the place, but we're on the lease now. What should we do?

Read your lease very carefully to see if you can assign it to someone else. Or talk to the manager and see if you can transfer the lease to his grandmother but she needs six months not a year. You can only try to deal with management and throw yourself on their mercy. It will probably cost you to move, and if you move and your financee moves, his grandmother will be on the street unless they accept her. They can only tell you no so consider begging for mercy. Lots of luck. Rather than the two of you moving, why don't you find her a place or ask management to rent a place to her for six months.

It sounds like your fiancee and grandmother were making the payments before you came along, and you were living whereever and making your payments, so why can't they continue to make the payments on the apartment for 6 more months while you and your honey get a short-term rental elsewhere? You'll be renting two places for 6 months, but isn't that what you were doing before?

See if you can work something out with the landlord. If she can swing the rent, just get another place and hope that she pays the rent. As long as the rent is paid, no harm, no foul.
