Ways to match ties:
1] match one of the colors in the tie to the shirt color
2] match one of the colors in the tie to the suit color
Usually, it's better to buy a shirt/tie at the same time. Try to make sure any tie you buy will go with several shirts, and any shirt can match several ties.
3] Start with some traditional slanted stripes, in navy/red. They flatter almost everyone.
4] Avoid solids, and horizontal stripes - make you look wider, and boring too.
5] Branch out to paisleys, small prints, hobby ties, holiday ties, tiny cartoon characters, etc.
6] avoid matching red shirt with red tie - it's almost impossible, unless they are a set. Blues and greens are usually easy; purples can be a challenge - consult a female advisor.
7] make sure tip of tie touches top of belt buckle when properly tied.

Here is a clue.
Pick a tie that has just the subtlest color of the shirt you want to wear with it in it.
If you pick a tie that has several or even a few colors of the color of your shirts you can wear the same tie with alot of the shirts. Pants don't have to match the tie unless of course it is a suit.

Put them up to the shirt. If it looks good, use it. If not, try the next tie. And if you have a S/O, get their opinion before you buy/wear it in public. Guys aren't known for their fashion sense.

Im not a guy, but i would think just pick a color that is in the tie and find a shirt that is the same color. Not that difficult, but then again, fashion isn't that easily understood with guys...no offense...its a stereotype i guess
