Actually, about ten seconds, if you put the egg in the microwave. The water content in the egg boils and creates pressure in the shell. Then, BOOM, the steam pressure in the egg exceeds the tensile strength of the shell, and you have instant mess all over the microwave. Please, children, do not try this at home. It must be performed only by professionals, preferably in a neighbor's microwave.

The proper way to boil an egg is to put clean eggs into a pot and cover with water. Turn the heat under the pot to high. When the water comes to a boil, turn the heat off and cover. In 10 minutes you have perfectly hard boiled eggs.

If your water is taking that long to come to a boil you might be having trouble with your heat source. Water, unless it's several gallons in a huge stock pot should not take that long to come to a boil.
