Yes i do have a laptop, and it does have an Ethernet card, but dosen't the router have to be connected to the main computer at all times?? (which in this case would be my laptop.. then I wouldn't be able to move around right?) that's why the PC is better to install the router.. i think..

Ok, you are under a common misconseption.

A router is a stand alone device that has nothing to do with any computer connected to it.

Here is how you want to connect everything.

-Phone Line from wall to DSL Modem
-Ethernet cable from DSL Modem to Routers WAN (Internet) port
-Install your USB adapter in the desktop
-turn on the wireless on your laptop

Thats it.

Now you will need to configure your router to access your DSL service so you can share internet.

To do this you open a browser window and in the address bar type the IP address of the router. This is usually something like 192.168.0.1 or something simular. Look in the routers installation instruction to be sure.

Now you need to configure the internet connection. Find the Internet section of the configuration and set it for PPPOE, DSL, and type in the username and password you use to access your DSL service.

Under the wireless section of the configuration name the SSID whatever you want. This will be the name of your wireless connection.

Dont turn on any security yet.

Now save your settings and that should do it. After everything is up and working you can enable wireless security on the router to keep neighbors from leeching on your internet bandwidth.

take the line coming into the house plug it into the router. now take a ethernet cable from the router to modem, on the router it will say main pc or slot #1.
now on the back of the router you'll see aditional ports "aka slots or phone jacks" those are going to connect to the computers if you have a wireless ethernet card then your all set for that laptop and do not need a cable.
you'll of course need to configure it, wich i can say is don't be intimidated by it all, it is rather simple. you being new is the only thing confusing in your mind.

Yep, get the ethernet card. It's cheap, real cheap and will save you more headaches.

You might need to work with your DSL provider when you get it all hooked up. Most routers come configured to do standard tpc/ip. DSL (at least the provider's I've used) use pppoe rather than tcp/ip. The router will need to be configured for pppoe (point to point protocol over ethernet) and the modem will need to be configured as passthru (not routing) or bridging...this is something you'll want to be handheld thru w/your provider.

Unfortunately you will need to get an Ethernet Card for your computer. Try contacting Bellsouth and see if they offer Ethernet cards for users of their service. the layout should be Cable to modem, modem to Router , Router to Computer using the Ethernet cord.

Do you have a ethernet port on the Laptop. You can use that to configure the router.

your computer might not have an ethernet port.. but your laptop should....

use that and the setup CD to setup your router... after the router is set up you will then be able to use the wireless on both your computer and your laptop to run wifi off your router.

Go buy an Ethernet card. You can't use a router without one.
