I suffer severe anxiety during presentations and job interviews. I can also get a bit nervous (not really severe anxiety) when I meet some new people who are not like me (especially different age, different social class..). But I do get along with new people who are like me & who would fit into my friendship/social group.
But the main problem is during presentaions and face-to-face interviews, and it is ruining my life. I've been to many interviews, but have never been able to land a job because of my anxiety. The jobs that I have gotten didn't involve any interviews.
Who do I see to fix this.. a general GP? Psychiatrist? Psychologist? Therapist? Hypnotist? (Does hypnosis really work?)
How do you know which one to choose?
And where do you find them? Yellow Pages?
How do you know if they're the right doctor?
Any other advice would be much appreciated!

Who you see is dependent on how you want to treat your anxiety. A GP may be able to give you medication that can help until you see a psychiatrist. The GP likely won't give you stuff for PRN. You really won't want to take medication all the time if it is just specific situations that trouble you. A psychiatrist can help decide on proper medication. Again, if you take a PRN, then go on an interview, you may seem a bit "drugged up", or you could take meds all the time, but have to deal with some serious side effects. A psychologist can help you deal with your anxiety through relaxation and systematic desentization, but the drawback is it takes time. So the obvious answer is see a psychiatrist for meds to help right away, and a psychologist for long term gain.

You need to see a therapist(i.e. psychologist, social worker). It is evident that you suffer from social anxiety that mostly relates to your personal performance. A therapist will be able to teach you how to stay calm, focused, confident, and at ease in the situations that make you feel anxious. I imagine the therapist you choose will do a lot of role playing, over and over again until you no longer feel anxious during the specific situations. Whatever you do i would not advise you to visit a GP no matter what. They are not qualified to deal with you specific case and will not make the best decision for you. Only see a psychiatrist if your therapist feels as though you would benafit from it in regards to being perscribed medication. Millions of people are in the same boat as you, and millions of people have been treated who were once in the same boat as you. You can do this and get through this just as they did :) Good luck

Family practice doctors are not really trained in that area. Psychologist are but be wary they like steady customer and often either try to medicate you or lengthen the time it takes to help you. There is an old story I heard about a person who needed help with anxiety problem which was not of a real serious nature. They went to a psychologist, a counselor and a well adjusted average person. The outcome was the average well adjusted person was able to relate their own personal experiences with the same problem really helped Where the psychologist and counselor were not able to.

I'll go for a Psychiatrist coz that one is a doctor. If there will be an addiotinal work-up/treatment for you anxiety, the Psychiatrist will refer you to someone who is a most help which specifically focus on your problem. Try to contact your local hospital if they have a Psychiatrist.

May as well start with the GP and see what he or she has to say. You may be referred to a psychiatrist or the doctor could prescribe some medication.

Get a referral from your doctor or friend for a reputable, trained therapist. You need to find out what it is you're telling yourself that is making you so anxious. Our thoughts control our feelings.
You don't know which one to choose until you get to know them. You just go to ones that are referred. You could also ask a pastor for a referral. That is how I found my therapist in San Diego.
You don't know if they're the right choice until you get to know them.
Maybe you could take a college course in public speaking?

Beta blockers might do the trick for the job interviews, and a GP could help you with that.
