We're painting the walls and building new storage space in our garage. I've researched garage floor paint and found very mixed (mostly negative) reviews. Most of the floor paints require extensive surface prep and, after all the effort, don't appear to hold up very well against blistering and separation even in normal usage. Are there any concrete paints that are worth the effort?

Just curious, does your research include the new epoxy coatings. I thought that they were pretty good and cleaned up easily.

My father painted his garage floor a few years ago with a speckled Epoxy floor paint from Home Depot. (I don't remember the brand name, but you'll find it easily.) The improvement was staggering. It has lasted very well, with only minimal chipping over the old oil stained areas, but he said he wasn't as detail oriented about cleaning those areas with the prescribed muriatic acid as he should have been. Prep, as with all things involving paint, is most critical. Don't be in such a hurry to lay down the paint that you skimp on prep.
Anyway, this stuff holds up very well. Even if you have to put some aside to go over trouble areas again in a couple years, it's worth all the effort. I swear it's almost like you could eat off that floor even today, and believe me, it was hit. The garage was over 30 years old. I'm sure the negative reviews you heard were from people who didn't prep properly. Remember, prep time usually takes about 3 or 4 times as much time and effort as the painting. That in mind, just do it. Do it right and you won't regret it.

I would not let the negative responses throw you. Even if the paint peels a bit in spots, it is going to be a ton better than trying to sweep or clean a bare concrete floor. I painted my basement floor, glad that i did. Just clean extremely well, use TSP or muratic acid to clean or etch the concrete first and let dry thoroughly. Use an oil base paint, more durable. If the paint peels in spots in a few years, assume that there is an impurity in the floor such as an oil stain etc. Spot treat it with TSP and paint again, eventually you will have a perfect floor.

the epoxy paints are pretty good.. ive painted one garage floor about 6 months ago.. very nice.. better than using a good enamel/oil.. with those when the floor gets wet it will loosen the paint and start flaking.. the epoxy paints aint all that cheap so do a good job cleaning and etching. i have heard that a cars hot tires will cause the epoxy paint to raise

The best I have found is, Cello Concrete Color seal. Just mop the floor and let dry, then paint. I don't know if they make it in colors, when I used it, it was like a navy gray color. It a very tough finish.
