I came to Calgary in Canada and was treated like a non-human being just for not being white. People would have fun around me but would never include me into their social circles.

I moved into Toronto and found that people here don't really care about race and will treat you just as if you were born here for the most part.

That made me think that parts of North America that were not exposed to immigrants could be very rough. I am right? Please let me understand!

According to some recent research, racism is linked with education and social status (poverty). It can also be attributed to parenting and today's media.

I don't believe the world is more or less racist than it was, I think the reason there are only "pockets" of racism in certain areas is because it is considered taboo.

Parts of North America least exposed to immigrants are, in my opinion, more likely to be racist. This is due to human nature. The whole "fear what you don't understand" frame of mind, and if you have had very little to no contact with someone of a different race/culture/religion, you are more likely to act out on that fear.

Never mind North America, racism is everywhere. Two tribes living next to each other in Africa - both will hate each other for the simple reason that they are from another village.

Londoners people dislike rural people. Half of the Belgiums hate the french, the other half hate the Dutch.

Racism is built in to everyone at birth or even before, several million years before. It is because we are afraid of strangers or anyone who is different to us. And the reason for this is -survival.

I do think there are pockets that still have more racist tendencies. I think some of it is down to education and maybe as you say, how much communities are exposed to other races and nationalities.
It is sad, but it could last for many generations as values do tend to be passed down in family and community.
I just keep hoping, one day we will truly be multi cultural.

It may not be colour. In the English satirical magazine Punch in the 1930's a cartoon was published and showed two chaps looking at another chap down the road. 'Oos 'e Bill?
Dunno. Looks like a stranger.
Chuck half a brick at 'im.

People are going to say The South, but in all honesty, racism is everywhere, for every culture in race.
