Knights templar ideas?

It is common belief that the once once great and rich society of the Knights Templar guarded something they found three floors underground in there headquarters. This item is often referred to as the holy grail. Whatever this item was it earned them almost any power they wanted with no questions. What are your theories of what this was, why they kept it a secret, why did it earn them such power and respect, and is it still in existence today.

Response to Terry: Only one of the knights templar got charged with worshiping Baphomet and it is actually also a translation of "Royal Blood". And no... I didnt get my info from info from the Divinci Code. (not that thats bad because a fair amount of what it says is recorded fact wether christians choose to believe it or not)

I'm convinced they found a few religious books that contradicted the histories and traditions they had been told by the catholic church.

Because the church had deemed such writings heretical, they had to keep them secret.

If the knights Templar had found the Holy Grail, do you really think the Christian Chirsh would have condemned them as Heretics and made charges of black magick. In the "trial" itself,the Templars were accused of worshipping an idol called "Baphomet" -- a French corruption of "Muhammad" -- which they supposedly picked up from the Muslim conquerors of the Holy Land. (Of course, the idea that ANY Muslim would worship an image of Muhammad says more about the parochial mentality of the European Church than anything else.) I'm not sure where you got your information...perhaps a movie or two?

The historical Templars themselves, fresh from the Crusades, returning to France, got rich in the Church market and drew the wrath of the of Philip the Fair. There was the a famous midnight arrest and the subsequent "trial" of the majority of Knights. There were the usual confessions of heresy and sodomy extracted under torture. Then there was the stake, where most historical accounts of the Templars end. The rest is tales and myths.

I agree with special chemical - I think it was some form of information that contradicts some of the foundation the "Church" is built upon. That would give them great barganing power. It's possible that they are still caretakers of this knowledge although more probable that the actual proof has been lost.
