bic1610 gives sound advice but I have to give thumbs up to a Mac. It doesn't matter what your school uses, your Mac can access any windows or mac files. If your school is wireless, you can access it. If it uses etherenet cables, you can get on line. What you won't be doing, is hopefully passing any viruses along. Macs do not get viruses, or malware etc. but they can forward a virus on to someone in an email. On a MacBook you'll get everything you need except maybe a better word processor. Just buy an educational version of Word or Office or get a copy of Open Office.

I am only going to state the facts and not my opinion.Pc's have 80% more software than macs.Stability a mac has due to the fact that there is not much running on it.Surfing the web speed wise will be determined by how much ram and your internet provider. To someone who is familiar with windows will have a hard time using a mac.If you are going for the basics and want stability go for a mac,if you want versatility and funtionality go with a PC.Macs are now using the same parts as pc's but charge up to double the price for the same specs as a pc.

You should get a PC instead of a Mac for high school, but try to get Windows XP because Windows Vista is not good.

While you will get a thousand different answers if you ask a hundred different people you might want to consider which system your school is primarly using. If your idea is to interface assignments with school systems to be able to upload and download assignments or projects then check with- your network administrator and get their input on which is best. If your idea is just to have a system to do homework reports on (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations) then it's a matter of personal choice.
I myself use Windows XP Media Center and I love it. I don't have problems with viruses because I protect against them. My one bad vote against windows right now is the change by Microsoft to Windows Vista. I have heard good things about it and I've heard bad things about it - just like I've heard about the Mac. My advise to you is this: Go out to the stores and put your hands on both machines and spend a little time with them and see which you like best. If you don't know how to navigate thru the screens, ask a sales person to help. Don't take our word for a major purchase like this - get out and see for yourself.

Get a Mac. No viruses, no spyware. If you're really brave, get an Ubuntu Linux machine from Dell. It'll be cheaper than the Mac, more stable, and even more secure.

For the reasons that you put, the Mac seems to suit your needs best. :)
But note that on a Mac you will not have nearly as many games available for it.
