Because they thought it would be "cute" or they couldnt think of any other name other than a stupid, dumb, idiotic name that the poor child would be stuck with for the rest of their lives.............

What is mockable is entirely dependant on what area and time you live in.
Gay didn't mean "homosexual" until the 1970s ... it meant "carefree" or "happy" before then. That's not really any different than giving your daughter the name Joy. Many non-English speakers wouldn't even know the newer connotation for the word.
Bobbie is a nickname for Roberta, just as Bobby is a nickname for Robert. If a girl is named Roberta, can you actually tell her that she has no right to use the nickname Bobby/Bobbie if its in her name just as plane as it's in your name? Now, I think there's a general problem with giving children nicknames and such instead of real names ... but that's a different issue.
What's wrong with Colin? Colin is a perfectly suitable name ... you might not like it, but its no worse than some of the names I've come across. I assume that you pronouce Colin wrong and think it's Colon ... because that's the only problem I can see with it. That, however, would make you the ignorant one, not the parents.
Also, Dick is a nickname for Richard. It came to be associated with male genetailia the same way that the word Johnny did ... because it is a common male name.
Now, some parents genuinely give their children horrible names ... you just haven't been able to list any of them.
I once met a woman named La (luh) dynasty (like the Han dynsasty). Okay, a little trashy ... but look at it when it's spelled out. Ladynasty. Now, that's horrible.

I don't know! I keep pointing out that the parent name love the name but the innocent child has to live with it. The parents may say it is unique, to the child it is strange!
I knew a girl who was names Kitty Kjar - UGH! I agree that names like Gay are bad and naming a girl a boy's name.
My name is "Robbin." My dad gave me the lame excuse that "Robin" was a boy's name. Either way I HATE IT! I got harassed about the spelling all through school. Since I was skinny, they called me ribbon.
Parents can be so cruel sometimes! Where is the common sense? Did that leave when the hormones went wacky?

There are TONS of names out there that can be used for a boy or a girl .. they spelling make it gender specific.
Robert=Roberta>> Bobbie
Michael=Michelle>>Mike, Micky,Mich
Thomas=Thomasina>> Tom, Tommy, Tommie
Jody=Jodie
Gale or Gayle=Gail
Jess=Jessica
Francis is both
Louis=Louise
Paul=Paulette
Nicholas+Nichole>>Nicky
Christopher=Christine>>Chris
Avery is a boy's name but used as a girls all the time! My grandson is Avery.
I met a woman named Douglas.. her father wanted a boy!
My grandmother named me after a man friend of hers . My middle name is Gale
I'm not sure what the problem is here.. all of these are fine names
Maybe that girl named Bobbie was named for her grandfather or a favorite uncle...
Maybe life hard but when isn't it? Don't make fun of a person's name.. just because you don't like sharing yours!

One of the problems is the apparently increasing numbers of women giving their daughters boy names. Apparently they wanted a boy. Very sad.
However, Bobby was very popular as a nickname for both men and women since at least WW2 and generally women spell it Bobbie.
My sister had the same problem with Pat.

Some people just dont think of those things. I have a friend named Gaye. She's Indian and Gaye is a nickname, it wasnt an issue til she moved to the states.
And my sister was sure that she thought of everything when naming her daughter and knew she had come up we an un-make-fun-able name: Autumn Lynn Duerr. The day sis brought her home, my nephews (not her kids) laughed when they heard the name and sai "HAH! Awww-dumb DURRRR!"
No matter what you name your kid, someone somewhere will find a way to make fun of it.

I think its very comical that parents put their kids through hell and don't even know it by giving them those names.
At the same time, I think you try to make it work. I've had people at school with really bad names and they would just go with it, laugh it off and don't let it phase them. Obviously those are the kids that have a high enough self confidence to get away with it.
Boddy is not a bad name at all :)

I agree totally. I am trying to find a decent baby name for my soon to be latest edition and after looking at some of the baby name lists online, I was appalled at the names some people call their kids! Not to mention some of the unspeakable names celebrities name their offspring. Pilot Inspektor (Jason Lee) , Apple (Gwenyth Paltrow), Princess Tiaamii (Jordan and Peter Andre) , Prince Michael (Michael Jackson), Jermajesty (Jermaine Jackson)...to name but a few!!

Because they are naming the child not the adult ... and most parents seem to have memory loss over childhood events and the kids that were teased in school ... I hate it when i see a name that is spelled wierd and the poor kid who has to grow up with it ...

A girl "Bobbie" is a nickname for Roberta, a perfectly normal, (though old and out of fashion name). Normally Girls with Guy names are just nicknames. Why do you even care what over people name their kids?

For the sake of the kid, I wish parents would consider the potential for harassment. Kids can be cruel and they don't need assistance to find something to mock a child.
Weird names are horrible to live with!
