I totally agree with Billie77 - Paul McCartney is a hugely underated bass player. Just listen to some of the bass lines on Revolver / Sgt Pepper /Abbey road and solo.
The big problem is he is such a talented songwriter/singer/multi-instrumentalist that his bass playing is often overlooked (Roger Waters is no slouch either)

Monty Colvin from the Galactic Cowboys was a horribly underrated bassist.

oh, i wouldn't have known, at least before a month ago. but then i bought the first violent femmes album.... amazing. every song had one simple guitar riff a 10-year-old could play, but their bassist plays the main sounds for every song. he's just all over the place. one guy said the bassist for queen? what?!! his riffs sound really cool but they don't take half as much skill as brian ritchie of the violent femmes. listen to them, and i'm sure you'll agree.
